Skincare… my favourite topic at work. Yet, so misunderstood by my patients and friends alike. Having healthy skin is considered to be a universal sign of health and beauty. Here are a few of the common mistakes I see women making with their skincare routines:

Mistake #1: Sun exposure

Sun exposure is the number one thing that you can manage and limit to save the health of your skin. I have learnt that most people are not fully aware of just how much damage the sun does to their skin.

It’s right up there with cigarette smoking.

And yes, you may be inside all day but the drive to work, the light from the window, and ambient lighting all play a role in photoaging. Limit sun exposure as much as you can. If you are outside, barrier protection is essential in the form of long sleeves, wide brimmed hats, and shade. And then obviously, sunscreen.

Mistake #2: Overcomplicating your home skincare

There is a multitude of information constantly bombarding us on social media. I often see so many patients completely overwhelmed with what they should be using at home when it is simple.

For most (not all skins), you should invest in three products:

  1. Good quality sunscreen: Separate to your daily moisturiser or make up with an SPF of at least 50
  2. Morning antioxidant serum: This is usually a vitamin C serum. Antioxidants protect the skin from oxidative damage such as pollution and the sun. They lighten, tighten, and brighten the skin.
  3. Evening retinoids are such an investment in terms of anti-aging.

Mistake #3: Being inconsistent

Instant gratification is not a thing when it comes to skincare – sorry! We recommend using your skincare routine for at least 4-6 weeks before you can expect any change. The skin’s cell cycle is around 28 days in healthy individuals so once a whole cycle has passed, we can assess your skin and the results of interventions. Just like lifting weights at a gym, one rep will not lead to any sort of gains – the same goes for skincare. Pick a routine. Be patient. Keep doing it!

Mistake #4: Not realising that our health is reflected on our skins

We can tell so much from a person’s skin, such as nutrient deficiencies and endocrine disorders. Our internal health is reflected on our skin. Sleep, hydration, healthy diet, managing stress and exercise should be investments you’re making into your life (and your skin).

Mistake #5: Not prioritising sleep

You need to sleep and sleep properly, not only for the benefit of your overall health but also your skin health! Sleep is the time of the day when the body renews and refreshes itself. Toxins are removed, processes restored and our glow renewed. Sleep, sleep, sleep!

The common mistakes are just that, mistakes. We don’t need fancy, expensive, and elaborate home skincare routines to create happy, healthy skin. When the basics are right, it shows!
